Alvor is one of those Algarve villages that earns its popularity without being flashy about it. It has a proper estuary, a beach that stretches long and clean in both directions, a tangle of cobbled streets in the old town, and enough restaurants and bars to make a week feel full without having to try too hard.
Here’s an honest guide to making the most of it.
The beach and estuary are the obvious draw. The beach at Alvor is excellent – wide enough to find space in summer, with dunes that provide shelter when the westerly gets going, and the estuary behind it offers calmer, shallower water that young children find easier and safer. It’s a good combination.
For the old town, an evening walk through the whitewashed streets around the church is one of the nicer things to do in the village. The atmosphere is genuinely pleasant.
For active days, there are watersports from the beach… kayaking, paddleboarding, boat trips along the coast toward Ponta da Piedade are popular and worth the trip.
And then there’s Eden Alvor, which sits in a category of its own. The 18-hole tropical mini golf course through a garden of 2,000-plus plants and three animatronic characters is genuinely unusual for the region. The heated saltwater pool is open to individuals, families or couples. The restaurant serves proper food in a good setting. The courtyard arcade games and pool table fill in the gaps. The TrackMan golf simulator lets you play some of the world’s most famous courses indoors, which appeals to golfers who want to play without committing to a full round on a proper course.
Eden works particularly well on days when the beach isn’t right – when there’s too much wind, or when you’ve done three consecutive beach days and need variety without having to drive far. It’s a short walk from most of the village accommodation, and unlike a lot of tourist activities in the Algarve, it works for multiple ages at once.
Alvor is also conveniently placed for day trips: Portimão is 15 minutes away, Lagos is 20 minutes, the Silves castle and the Monchique mountains are both within easy reach.
