Portimão gets the name recognition. It’s a proper city — large marina, riverside culture, Formula 1 circuit nearby, Praia da Rocha just down the road. For visitors to the western Algarve, it’s usually the anchor point: fly in to Faro, transfer to Portimão, base yourself there.
But the villages around Portimão are worth considering differently.
Alvor, specifically, is fifteen minutes from Portimão and operates at a completely different speed. The cobbled streets around the parish church have remained largely unchanged. The estuary behind the beach creates a natural lagoon that’s calmer than the open sea — useful for families with small children. The village restaurants are mostly small, real, and not designed primarily for tourists. The boardwalk along the estuary is one of the nicer evening walks in the region.
And Alvor has Eden.
For a week in the western Algarve, a base in Alvor gives you proximity to the beach, the estuary, the village, and Eden Alvor — all on foot — while Portimão is still a few minutes away for the days when you want the city’s scale and energy. Lagos is twenty minutes in the other direction. The Silves castle and the Monchique mountains are both under an hour.
Alvor’s old town is lively until late, and Eden’s courtyard and mini golf stay open to match.
For families especially, Alvor tends to win the comparison. The beach is wide, the village is safe and walkable, and Eden provides the reliable rainy-day or alternative-afternoon option that makes a full week feel easy rather than complicated.
