Night Golf in Alvor: Why After Dark is the Best Time to Play

Night mini golf at Eden Alvor

There’s a moment, somewhere around the fifteenth hole, when the sun finally dips below the hills and trees and the garden at Eden changes completely. The air cools slightly from the afternoon heat. The colours deepen. And then the lights come on.

If you’ve only ever played mini golf in daylight, you’re missing something.

Eden Alvor’s 18-hole course is open late – until 10pm in winter, and until after midnight in summer – and honestly, evening is when it’s at its best. The tropical garden that wraps around the course takes on a completely different atmosphere once the lights kick in. Palms glow from below. The waterfall under Kong catches the light and turns theatrical. Baz the Talking Tree and Mr Cob Ra are arguably more animated in the dark (in the best way). The whole place feels like a little secret that most visitors and tourists don’t know about.

During the day, mini golf in the Algarve heat is fine. People do it, enjoy it, move on. But after dark? The temperature drops to something genuinely pleasant, there’s no squinting into the sun, and the course – all 18 holes winding through more than 2,000 tropical plants – looks like something from a film set.

The competitive scene heats up too. Something about the lights and the cooler air makes everyone take their putts slightly more seriously. Or slightly less seriously, depending on how many drinks have been involved from the courtyard.

And that’s the other thing: the courtyard at Eden stays buzzing into the evening. Drinks, snacks, ice cream, arcade games… it doesn’t shut down when the sun does. You can finish your round, grab a cold drink, challenge someone to a game of air hockey or arcade games, and carry on the night well past the point where most have called it a day.

In summer, the course staying open past midnight is a treat for those looking to enjoy mini golf and Eden’s restaurant. For families with kids who need the midday heat to wear off first, for couples looking for something different after dinner, or for anyone who just wants their evening to go a bit longer than expected – night golf at Eden is the answer.

One practical tip: if you’re coming specifically for the atmosphere of the lit-up course, aim for around 9pm in summer. You’ll get the last of the sunset light on the garden, and then watch it transform as the evening sets in. It’s worth timing it that way.

So if you’re staying in Alvor or nearby in Portimão, and you’re wondering what to do on an evening when dinner is done and the night is young – come and meet Baz, Mr Cob Ra or Eden’s Kong in the dark. They will be waiting.
