There are a lot of things that look better in daylight. Mini golf at Eden Alvor is not one of them.
The course during the day is beautiful — a genuine tropical garden of 2,000-plus plants, a real waterfall, three animatronic characters, and ambient sounds of birds and wildlife. It’s impressive by any measure. But the lit-up night version is something different.
As the sun drops, the course transforms. Coloured lights illuminate the garden from below, giving the palms and tropical plants a theatrical quality that doesn’t exist at noon. The waterfall under the Eden Kong catches light and turns the waterfall feature into something cinematic. Baz the Talking Tree, already a warm and welcoming presence in daylight, seems to come into his own after dark — chattier, more animated, the kind of host who gets better as the evening goes on.
The ambient sound — birds, monkeys, lions — is more noticeable in the evening when the background noise of the day has dropped. Walking the back nine after 9pm, with the garden lit and the animal sounds in the air, is a genuinely unusual experience.
And then there’s the temperature. Evening in the Algarve summer is when the heat relents and everything becomes pleasant rather than something to manage. Playing mini golf in the cooling evening air, with a warm courtyard and cold drinks to retreat to between holes, is the kind of simple pleasure that holidays are supposed to provide and don’t always manage.
In summer, the course stays open past midnight. In winter, until 10pm. There is essentially no other mini golf experience in the western Algarve that offers the night version with this kind of atmosphere.
